Founded in 1986, South Plains Rural Health Services, Inc. (SPRHS) serves the federally designated Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) rural communities of Cochran, Dawson, Hockley, Lynn, Terry, Howard and Yoakum counties in Texas. All of these communities are located in rural West Texas close to the New Mexico border. SPRHS (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization) has the distinction of being a federally funded Community Health Center (CHC) and a Migrant Health Center (MHC) and has a rich history of providing primary health care, dental, mental health and pharmacy services to migrant/seasonal farm workers, economically disadvantaged individuals and uninsured/underinsured residents in our rural isolated service area. SPRHS is committed to seeing all patients regardless of their ability to pay and turns no patient away. Every effort is made to achieve 100% access and 0% health disparities in our service area.
SPRHS services are provided through three (3) clinic sites located in Levelland, Big Spring, and Lamesa, Texas. SPRHS employs 100 full time employees. in 2023 SPRHS provided services to 9,925 individuals through 31,472 encounters. Sixty-eight (68%) percent were below 100% of the federal poverty level and 96% were below 200% of the poverty level, 51% were uninsured. Sixty-seven (67%) of SPRHS clients are Hispanic.
The South Plains Rural Health Food Bank in Levelland was established in 2011 with support from the South Plains Food Bank in Lubbock, Texas. Funding for food bank services is generated through income received by the Center through patient encounters and grants are occasionally awarded for support, such as those received from the Maximus Foundation for the past several years. Food Bank services are eligible to anyone in the community, individuals do not have to be patients of SPRHS. Food for distribution is received through several sources but the majority is purchased by SPRHS. When available, commodities are purchased through the South Plains Food Bank in Lubbock. SPRHS also receives generous donations weekly from the local Walmart in Levelland as well as Costco in Lubbock. Occasionally, fresh produce products are received from local farmers such as potatoes and melons. SPRHS wishes to increase the availability of fresh produce for its clients by starting its own garden and to offer the healthiest options when available. In 2023 SPRHS provided food boxes to 5066 individuals and this number continues to grow annually.
